Mapping cycling behaviour in Toronto
Mapping is a powerful tool to help us understand and communicate patterns across geographic areas. It has been widely used to understand automotive and transit transportation patterns. It has been applied to cycling far less frequently.
Award-winning cartographer Emily Watt, and data analyst George Liu, with the guidance of primary investigator Beth Savan and the TCT2 team spent the summer of 2012 mapping cycling patterns by ward, in Toronto
George compared and combined data sets from the Canadian Census and Ontario's Transportation Tomorrow Survey. Using his talents he was able to create new data sets and identify new relationships by ward. Emily and George then worked together to translate the data into maps of cycling behaviour, demographics and infrastructure in Toronto. Emily also integrated the University of British Columbia's Bikescore/Bikeability data into the maps.
Preliminary results were work shopped by project partners and urban experts in late October 2012. This resulted in further analysis and mapping work that was conducted by Trudy Ledsham and Katie Wittmann over the winter of 2013.
Our first mapping report Mapping Cycling Behaviour in Toronto was launched at the Complete Streets Forum in May 2013.
A small selection of the maps we have created are available here.
